Examiner advertising without asking for our opinion

I noticed advertising on my page. I don't know how long eEaminer.com has put in their advert, but I find just noticed it today. I find it annoying that they added it onto my page without asking me, nor offering payment.

I don't know about you, but I signed up to write for NowPublic....

Is this the way it is going to be?....

I would expect to see the type of advertising that Examiner run on this site soon.

It's their site now and they are out to make $$.

I agree with you Sara, without a doubt but we must expect this to happen.

It's a shame.

Preferences and politics aside, I suggest you get AdBlockPlus if you use Firefox, sara. I've not seen an ad for years - it the single most important Firefox addon for me.

Due to the Examiner takeover I will be leaving NowPublic.  I have just asked that my account be deleted, so I don't know if this message will stay up.

The Examiner is a right wing rag which follows a free distribution model.  It has been banned in many towns and neighborhoods due to this policy.  It's thrown in front of houses in its plastic wrapper whether people want it or not.  It leads to litter and tempting thieves as there is no way to stop or suspend distribution if you will be away, unlike a paid newspaper subscription.

The only way I found to have the newspaper not thrown in front of my house was to wait for the delivery driver in the middle of the night and physically block his car.  Repeated calls and e-mails to the Examiner were ignored and delivery continued until I took this action.

NowPublic is NowDoomed.

Hey Folks,

I just wanted to jump in here and address some of the concerns you raised.   As we integrate NowPublic with Examiner.com you will start seeing promotions back to NowPublic and this will drive traffic back to your stories.  If you look at the footer of their site now you'll see links to all of our channels.

Also, I wanted to clarify that Examiner.com and the Washington and San Francisco Examiner are not the same thing even though we share the same parent company.   If you need to contact them about delivery then please get in touch with them via the links above.

Finally, you will be receiving an email this week with some additional information and soon you'll hear about future revenue sharing opportunities that we'll be rolling out  shortly.  On that note, if you are interested in finding out how to make money by becoming an Examiner check out their site.   They've got tons of interesting opportunities.  Have a look and let us know what you think.  I have applied to become the 'vacation examiner'.  I hope that was not a career limiting move.

Thanks for all your help,

Michael.

Things change - sometimes they have to but so many things have a habit of changing for the worst... so thanks for the extra information and don't be shy on the information front.

We members are just looking out for something we enjoy and care about - can't help but be concerned... =:-)

NP was nominated this year for a reason. How many nominations and awards has Examiner had?

I agree with you, we contribute our time at NP because we enjoy it and care, and obviously not for the money.  It is the writers who are responsible for its success just as much as the technical people. It is not about the money MT... NP was just a unique place like no other. We just felt good being here. If money was the issue we would already be writing for the examiner, not NP, now wouldn't we?

But in all fairness, I am willing to hear them out, via newsletter. Just hope there is room for hearing the writers' voices. It would be nice to be part of the decision making and the process, instead of being left out, and then handed the "rules".

I would like to see the present examiner's ads a little bit smaller. You don't have to shout! It is giving me a headache. And if that is the way NP is going, I can't work like that. To lose the story into the advertising is a sin!

MT, I did check out the small NP link at examiner. Now compare that with the examiner link at NP, like a bulldozer.  Size matters.

I just wanted to duplicate your comment in case it does get deleted.

Michael,

I'm aware that the various Examiners are different companies, but you left out who owns all of these companies under one big corporate umbrella, one Philip F. Anschutz.  He's an ultra-conservative whom I wish not to earn one nickel from anything I do, nor do I wish to compromise my ethics by accepting any money from him.

As to contacting the Examiner via the links provided--I did.  I was ignored.  Repeatedly.  I even contacted our county consumer affairs office and was given an e-mail address to contact at the paper.  My request to not have it delivered was once again ignored.

I fear what will happen here at NowPublic is that you will have more people writing in hopes of earning money, and fewer people writing because something needs to be said.  Not a good paradigm shift if you ask me.

Why not just leave NP as is and the ones who want to make money can write for examiner?

Great comment, Sara.  Hoping too that NowP does not become a duplicate website to the boring-looking Examiner.com.  Respectfully, Caj1

Michael, Your Examiner.com and footer link come up blank for me.  I suspect it has to do with the Canadian site now being up, as I was redirected when I typed in examiner.com.  I see they have a neat little section for Now Public in the bottom corner (key words being neat and little).

But the advertisements they've placed here are quite different.  The top one's ok, the one on the right is very distracting, and the pop up?  Urgh!  Thank goodness for pop up blockers!

Sara, I fear too that this site has lost its uniqueness.  But it's to be expected, change is the law of life.

I agree. IRRITATING and distracting, like I said it is giving me a headache. Not a pleasurable site anymore. I don't like working anywhere, where people feel like they have to shout and be aggressive/pushy.

Hello! Is anybody listening?

I expect change and even welcome it, when it is for the better. I fear richpix's brave last words: NowPublic is NowDoomed.

I bet examiners don't even make that much money either.

*** Technical question.... why are all the comments coming up in italic????????????

There are pop-ups?! Come on NP! Everyone agreed circa 2005 that pop-ups are the most irritating things on all the web!

Pop-ups - been a while since I've saw a pop-up lol

I checked it out, it's a questionnaire asking you what you think of the Examiner website.

Two points,

1. Nowpublic is a world platform and the Examiner is a north American platform, so many of us can not be examiners.

2. I hate all these damn pop up adverts its not really professional could you please only place adverts on the main pages only.

Why?  and why is there programs created to do just that. Because popup became disliked and are actual viewed as being an unprofessional form of advertising by most responsible web site owners. Yes its as bad as porn site promotion where pop ups first became prominent.

Yes its made Nowpublic look like a porn site! Advertising on the main page is much more professional
